[tri-med] Re: cleft palate

Arthur: It is simply AMAZING that Refoel is nine months old--seems like just
yesterday he was born. Soleah had many issues with sucking even though she
only had a high palate (not cleft) . . . she was ng tube fed but we always gave
her a premie pacifier to allow her to continue to suck and finally after time
she did eat by mouth. With Soleah, some people considered (and were very vocal
about it) the surgeries and test "I put her through" but at 11 years old and
going strong, I'm happy I did. As long as he is gaining strength and you feel
his life will be improved either now or later by the procedures, I would be for
it.

Does it make sense to fix a cleft palate? Refoel is now nine months old. He
does show some sucking ability. Does anyone have experience with trisomy 13 and
severe celft palate. He has no nose and restrticted arirways, so there is
little chance he will be able to get out the trach. Does it make sense to make
him go through all those operations to fix the palate? Sincerely, Arthur
