I tried to nurse Soleah as soon as she was born and she did try to suck some
but then turned blue . . . not good. Then she started going downhill (not
because of breastfeeding!) and was put on IV's. I did pump all of that time
and then probably for about two months. She did get my milk since we saved it
and eventually fed it to her through an ng tube but my milk did not stay in
longer. I wished I had done more to keep it in since eventually she probably
could have nursed. There was so much going on medically though, that was the
last thing on my mind. After several months, when she was able to drink by
mouth, we trained her to suck using a Haberman feeder which is one used for
babies with cleft pallete, etc, It has a different nipple and you can help the
baby drink by squeezing some liquid while they are sucking. She did drink from
a bottle well sometime after the first nine months--then she used a preemie
nipple. She stayed on the bottle for about three years and did
eventually learn to drink her Pediasure through a straw. She never has
learned to stop and take a breath though--she tries to finish whatever she has
without stopping for air!
