The same goes for measles - there are loads of kids out there who will get
over measles quite easily. But in some the virus will reactivate and cause
SSPE (I think I have the letters right - Sub Acute Sclerosing Pan
Encephalitis). It hits years after even a mild dose of measles in people so
susceptible. SSPE is really nasty - typical kids just entering adolescence
suddenly lose everything and end up in a vegetative state - and the cause is
the simple case of measles that they had as a child. Thankfully because we
are seeing less cases of measles we are seeing less cases of SSPE and thats
not a bad thing.
Karen, Mum to Alex (10 years, T-18 Mosaic)
Karen, I know of a little boy (my cousins cousin) from here who contracted
this illness - SSPE. It was many years ago now, but it happened just as you
said. He was about 8-9 years old at the time, his parents realised
something was wrong when he started losing his balance and very soon was
unable to do much at all. It was terribly cruel for his family to watch
this once energetic young boy lose his functioning. He passed away within
the year, and it was confirmed that it was caused from having measles when
he was younger.
And my 2c worth about Chicken Pox vaccine - both my girls have had the the
vaccination. I asked my Health Care Sister what she thought about it
beforehand and her answer was "if you can prevent them from being sick, the
pain and discomfort it can cause and the scarring - why wouldn't you?"
