A lot of people don't quaranteen their kids with that stuff anymore.
When the kids were small I'd met some other Mom's at the play area at
McDonalds (can you say "expose your child to everything and anything"? LOL)
And a woman there had her actively contagious chicken pox ridden child
there.....playing in the play area.

Alex contracted the chicken pox on his 3rd birthday. They were going around
the in-home daycare he attended twice weekly during one of my 2 part-time
'working outside the home' periods.
Ugly case, they were everywhere but the bottoms of his feet. He still has
some scars. Not because he picked or scratched but they were so deep that
the scabs eventually caught on clothing etc (one got caught on my Mom's
sweater and pulled off bleeding when she was holding him and left her guild
ridden, she still checks out the spot on his arm).
I had worried because of the allergies and asthma but no problems.
Molly was 6 when she contracted them in kindergarten. I was preg for her
when Alex had them, she was exposed a few times prior to that but they never
took. Maybe some natural immunity early on? However, she had an even nastier
case than Alex did-- actually IN her nose, ears, private parts (ouch!) and
mouth. Spent 4 nights up with a screaming/crying child.
