Chris,
It means threshold electrical stimulation. Morgan is currently using the
therapy on his legs. He had it on his trunk for 2 yrs. What it consists
of is a little machine and some electrodes. It is similar to those things
you saw on t.v. a couple of years ago that were supposed to exercise your
muscles, making them contract, without you having to do any real exercise.
But,it IS NOT the same thing. The therapy must be done under a trained
p.t. or physician. In our case, Morgan's p.t. oversees it. She had to
receive special training in this field. She decides what muscles to target
and shows me where to place the electrodes. She also tells us what setting
the impulses should be at. The little machine (small enough to hold in
your hand) sends low impulses to the muscles, not enough of an impulse to
make them contract, just enough for the muscle to "feel" it. This is all
done at night while Morgan is sleeping. For optimal gains it needs to be
worn 5 or 6 nights a week. It is something that is a long term therapy. I
believe their website says to see maximum benefits the therapy lasts for 5
to 6 yrs. Morgan has been doing it for 2 1/2 yrs. now. I think it really
helped to strengthen his trunk muscles.
