[tri-med] Strabismus

I know strabismus comes up quite a bit on the lists and although this isn't
directly trisomy related I thought you may be interested.

I have been having a hard time seeing over the last 12 months or so. At
first my doctor assured me it was because of the cortisone and it would
return to normal when I stopped taking it. It improved, but didnt get better
completely. Anyway I just put up with it as stubborn mums are wont to do.

Then I went for a physical for this new paid employment and flunked the eye
test when my eyes were used individually - passed together. I made a mental
note that I would have to see someone soon (yeah right) Then in this new job
I am doing a lot of reading street directories in the car at night - and I
couldnt. I really couldnt see them. So I finally gave in and went to the eye
doctor.

Seems that my strabismus has finally taken its toll. We all know that a
strabismus untreated can cause the wandering eye to learn not to see. I like
most of you thought that that problem only happened in the first few years
and that if the wandering eye learnt to "see" it would always see - seems
thats not so.

It seems that because of all the close work (these days computers) where I
dont take adequate breaks (bad OT, bad OT) that my wandering eye has decided
not to see anymore, so I am now technically blind in one eye. To make
matters worse, the other eye, after years of compensating for the wandering
eye has decided to start packing it in. Maybe thats why I was finding it
harder and harder to do all the list stuff - I dont know, a lot had to do
with the emotional toll of the list.

Anyway to cut to the chase - I now need "computer" glasses and have been
banned from sitting here all day (or all night) without breaks.

In some ways I am looking forward to them - you guys wont be so fuzzy all
time, even when I havent been on the sauce :-))))))) The problem for me is
the cost, but I will deal with that when they arrive. You will love them -
gorgeous granny half glasses that make me look like the granny that I am (NO
FAIR!!!! - I dont want to be OLD!!) The first person to comment on the look
gets wet noodle lashings!!!

They doubt that they will be able to get the wandering eye to "see" again
even if I had the surgery so I think I will pass on trying. Surgery has
never been suggested before, probably because the strabismus wasnt picked up
until I was in my teens, after years of complaining of eye problems. Its
never really caused me great problems before, and became more of a party
trick to let the eye flick out and wander :-))

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up
where I intended to be.
