[tri-med] Re: Some questions about fussiness and teeth grinding....

Ellie has always rocked herself back and forward on all fours since she
began crawling (we call it "doing her exercises") and she then started
making humming sounds while doing this which has slowly got louder and
louder over the months. If she's really tired it can get very loud and
constant and it ends up with her bursting into tears. I think we need to
accept that she is probably going to do this for some time and distractions
do work to an extent but she always goes back to rocking as it seems to be a
comfort for her. Like you say, Tracy, we are used to it and if she is
reasonably moderate with her humming we don't really notice it, it just
drives us up the wall when it gets to the hysterical and loud stage. But we
were at a BBQ the other week and someone did comment on her rocking. It'll
soon be getting to the stage that we will have to explain why we think she
does this, even to complete strangers.
The other idiosyncrasy she has recently developed is to point to the wall,
frown, have a "conversation" with an invisible person/thing and then turn
around to me and smile or laugh. It's cute but confusing too!

Cody grinds almost 24/7 it is especially bad if there are vistors in the
house or something is not the norm. The dentist said that his back teeth
are ground down ALOT and it is something that we have to worry about when
his adult teeth are in. He is 9 1/2 and has only lost 4 baby teeth so I
think we have time to work on it. For now we have tried different
therapies, things for him to bite down on but nothing seems to stop it. We
have had guests over and they also hear his grinding during the night but we
are used to it and do not hear it any more. Even during the day people will
say Cody please stop and I'll say what is he doing. The reply usually is
don't you hear that? I say sorry no I am so use to it that I don't hear it
any more.
