I asked the Shriners for help with Annette's hands and legs. Her legs don't
extend all the way. Of course we know about the hands, right? Anyway, this is
what they replied:
"Orthopedic treatment has found to be of limited benefit in certain conditions,
such as athetoid cerebral palsy, quadriplegic cerebral palsy, global
development delay, many neuromuscular conditions, infantile seizures and
hypotonia.
Review of your child's application shows that your child's medical condition
would best be primarily treated by a docotr specializing in Neurology or
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Although orthopedic surgeons may be
invilved in your child's case, it is best carried out in a multidisciplinary
Children's Hospital, rather than a specialty hospital such as Shriners. As a
result, we are unable to accept your child for care at the Houston Shriners
Hospital.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah."
No one examined her. We didn't even make it in the door. lol.
Annette

I talked with my Mom this morning, Dad's a Shriner. Has been for years. In
fact, they just worked the Buick Open (golf tournament in Grand Blanc
Michigan a few weeks ago) and they earned $14,000 for the Children's
Hospitals over 4 LONG days of work. This $$ number is up from last year
because Tiger Woods was there this year and the crowds increase. They (the
band Dad is part of) worked a food and a beer tent and get 10% of the take
for the hospitals. They got another few thousand from the donation jars for
the "ladder of smiles". All the trips/conventions etc that Shriners are
known for are paid by the Shriner's themselves. The money they raise ALL
goes to the hospitals and doesn't pay for their activities. My dad is in an
Oriental Band.
She talked with my Dad when he got home and this is what they said:
First off, the Shriner's are a volunteer organization. The men raise the
funds to keep the various hospitals up and running. It is possible that the
VOLUNTEER who first looked at the application made a mistake. They said,
call, talk with someone different from whom you first dealt with and ask why
she was denied.
Yes, you can make too much money for the Shriner's hospital (or that used to
be the case they said, unless the administration has changed and they are
not aware). These hospitals were started as charity hospitals for the needy
who couldn't get help anywhere else. If they took everyone who applied those
in dire straits could fall through the cracks.
It is possible that there maxed money/employee wise at the facility you have
applied to. There are only so many resources to go around and perhaps they
can't take new people right now. Ask if there is a waiting list.
It is possible that they don't offer the services that your daughter needs.
Dad said that's the biggest reason for denying any child as there are only
specific services they offer. Perhaps a spec surgery isn't one that the drs
at that hospital perform being an example.
Also, maybe the medical report from you dr wasn't "right" for getting her
in.
My folks asked if your daughter had been examined yet by someone at the
Shriner's Hospital.
And that if you were denied you should have been told WHY.
Dad said if you'd contact me with your Name and ph # he would check into it
for you. Before Sunday if possible as he's going to a meeting. Give as many
specifics as you can.
