Hi All -
Well, Mommy and Daddy are wiped out. We are home and Savannah is in the
ICU unit at the Hospital. She will not be able to have open heart
surgery as she is not a good candidate. They could not get the pressures
in her heart to come down, so she may never be a good surgical candidate.
If they were to operate and close the heart defect (the VSD) then the
right side of her heart would fail. Her Cardiologist says that she has a
very strong heart and tolerated the catheritization very well. It was
hard to ventilate her as she has a very small passageway and also may
have a little bit of an obstruction. They did get her ventilated with
ease considering but then had a hard time finding a vein to get an IV
started. Well, she has an IV site in her head!!! UGH! She has had two
blood transfusions. She is stable at this time and she came off the vent
within an hour after she was out of the procedure. They finally got her
heart rate to come down, it was in the 200's - 210's it is now down to
the 140's-160's. When we left her temp was at 38.6 C (appx 104 F) but
they had given her motrin and that seemed to be helping. They were going
to run more blood tests on her. She has not eaten as of yet, but they
are going to try to bottle feed her soon. She is getting IV fluid and
they are giving her a major dose of Lasix to take the extra fluid off her
lungs that she can't/won't cough up. The nurse said that she has had
several wet diapers and they are very pleased with her progress. She is
only saturating in the lower 80's but they seem to be pleased with that,
although Mom and Dad are not. I want to thank every one of you for the
thoughts and prayers for Savannah. The little Miss is a fighter and the
doctors can definately tell that. They keep saying that they are
treating her as Savannah and not as Trisomy 18! We are so very lucky and
thankful that we have such wonderful doctors. The Cardio-thoracic
surgeon called us at home tonight to again explain why they could not
have the surgery, wow that was quite a shock!! Anyhow, thanks again and
I will update again tomorrow. She should be home soon and then Mommy
will be much happier!
Take Care,
Darcy with the wonderful hubby, Andreas
