A few months ago I think I posted to the list about my son and his wife and
the baby they were expecting. An ultrasound about about 20 weeks showed some
growth abnormalities and the doc that did the ultrasound told them that he
suspected a chromosome abnormality, not Down Syndrome. He even discussed
amnio/termination with them. Now some would think that my son, Chris, being
three years
older than Dom might have an idea of what the doc was talking about, but I am
certain he did not. Besides, at our house, having something abnormal was
normal. But it about stopped my heart. The kids did not at all consider
terminating
and they did not do any research other than to talk to Maria's regular OB who
did not think there were any serious problems.
They went back for a second u/s and it was a different doc who thought
everything looked ok, except that one of the baby's kidneys seemed small. I
just
want anyone that remembers that far back to know, they had a beautiful, healthy
little girl, Kristina Yvette on September 24. She was 7 lbs, 10 oz and 20
inches long. When I heard her crying on my cell phone just a few minutes after
she
was born, I breathed a giant sigh of relief. They took her last week to the
pediatric urologist and her right kidney did not fully develop. He told them
that her left kidney was perfectly healthy and she would be one of those people
who goes through life with just one kidney. He did not forsee any problems.
What appeared to be too small was probably a mistake on due dates. Maria said
about a week later than what the docs said and Kristina was born on the date
that
Maria thought she would be. I don't know that this post belongs on this
thread, other than if they had gone along with the first doc, the outcome could
have been very different.
