YES!!! - The surgeon who finally did the surgery on Alex (they can't say it
hasn't been done here now!!!) agreed because he had done surgery on T-18'ers
in England. He was a lovely, lovely man who recounted the time when he was a
young surgeon and they just "didn't" operate on kids with T-21. He said that
he was pleased things had changed some, and said that it was time things
changed with kids who had T-18. As he said - each child has to be assessed
individually. So the problem here is not the surgeon - we can get the
surgeons to do it - its getting the kids past the cardiologists to the
surgeons. SOFT now has contacts with cardio's in most states that will
assess honestly and surgeons who will operate if the parents want. We also
have charities willing to bring kids interstate for assessment and surgery
if need be. We still meet a lot of opposition, often from unexpected
sources, but it can be done.
