We started with blowing through the straw first. They have to practice
breath intake to blow. You can also practice blowing something light like
cotton balls or packing peanuts first, it's easier and they can see what the
results are. Also, liquid bubbles with a wand.

Personally I don't like the "fancy" decorator straws because you can't get
the curly/curved parts clean unless you only drink water. They trap the
liquid and may not rinse out--esp hidden parts behind colored plastic. Yes,
if you rinse immediately after use it's better but......
 A straight straw you can rinse clean--nothing to catch and hold liquid, esp
the disposable ones.  :0)  I'm a clean freak especially about food. Anal
even, just ask my family.
