I tried to breast feed Michelle since I breast fed my other children almost
a year each but Michelle could not get her small mouth latched on good and
didn't really have the strength to do it.  So I pumped for 4 months and also
over filled a freezer.  We tried a bottle with my breastmilk fortified with
formula and Michelle at first would take 1/2 from the bottle before she
would tire out and then we would feed her the rest thru the NG tube. Then
around 2 months Michelle had some bleeding in her lower GI tract and the GI
doctor blamed it on an intolerance of the proteins in the formula and my
breastmilk.  (I still don't think the breastmilk did it because later I
added the breastmilk back in and Michelle was fine with it.) So we changed
to Neocate.  At the same time, Michelle started refluxing worse and either
due to the reflux or the nasty taste of Neocate, she drank very little
anymore and was mostly tube fed...although I tried and tried the bottle.

I agree that pumping made me feel like at least I was doing something for
Michelle and even though it was time consuming, it was worth it for me for a
while.  And while I love breast feeding and hate the fuss of bottles, the
most important thing is to do what is right for you and your baby!  There is
no one right way.
