Hi Nicole...
I know Devon isn't probably what you had in mind when you wrote about
"younger triers" but since he was Sierra's age once and still, even at the
age of 8 1/2 yrs, takes a 2 oz bottle at bedtime (as a comfort/woobie kind
of thing)...I figured he qualifies :o)
When Devon started school at 3 yrs...he was still on a bottle although we
had tried finding a cup for him that was both safe for him (with his
dysphagia) and one that he would actually like (there were/are sensory
issues to consider as well). We bought every kind of sippy cup we could
find...with little or no success :o( Either the holes were too small or the
contraption in the lid would keep the thickened liquids from coming through
the holes. OR...the spouts were made of hard plastic or they were too long
or too short or the wrong shape or the cup shape wierded him out too
much....if it wasn't one thing it was another! Meanwhile we worried that he
would start to chew the nipples on the bottles and choke on the nipple or it
would ruin his teeth :o( FINALLY...one of his aids in his classroom was
doing her own shopping at KMart and was in the Housewares section and saw a
sipper cup that had a long and slim sipper and a regular shaped cup and she
thought of Devon and bought it for him to try....HE LIKED IT!!!! That was
when he was 3 1/2 yrs old. Until last year he was still having a bottle in
the early AM when he first awoke and last thing before bed...until
September...now he just takes his "comfort/woobie baba" which is 2oz of milk
sitting up on the couch to go to sleep with. We've since found another kind
of sipper cup that has a flexible sipper (at Toys R Us) made by Avent (I
think is how ya spell it)...he still drinks faster than we would like...but
since he has learned how to do successive swallows he hasn't had any
problems and he hasn't choked. It took a long time working with a speech
therapist and lots and lots of oral motor therapy to teach him how to drink
and swallow from a cup. He can drink from a nosey cup but not only is he a
little to wild and crazy AND a piggy AND he doesn't like it...but he still
doesn't quite get that he's not suppose to just "drink and fling"...although
many times now he will bring me his cup when he's done...he's still an imp
at times though :o) Like a few minutes ago when I went to put in his new
Tigger Movie and I forgot to put his nutrigrain bar up out of his reach...as
soon as I was over by the TV, he just about ran over to it and grabbed the
3/4 of it that was left and jammed it into his mouth :o(
{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{SIGH}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} I could only get a little back out
of his mouth while he laughed at me as I tried :o(
I'm sure there are those that would judge me harshly for still giving him
his bedtime baba...but ya know what??? TOUGH TUTU'S!!!!! His teeth are
beautiful... when he's falling asleep he doesn't chew the nipples AND the
nipples actually insure that he drinks slower...and we aren't hurting
anyone. Heck...I'm sure there are those that think he should be drinking
from a regular cup or glass...but they aren't his mom and dad and we don't
see anything wrong with it :op
Just my 2 cents as Michigan Michelle likes to say :o)
