Or just stress.
I remember so well one day when Alex's pediatrician came around to the ward
during one of our trips in through the ER after some bad apneas.
Alex was sleeping soundly and I was pumping. I was all set up and had a
brilliant flow going........ The ped walked in and told me he thought Alex
was having seizures. The flow stopped immediately and I couldn't pump a drop
for the rest of the day.(he didn't have seizures either!!)
I didn't have a lot of help with the breast feeding issues with Alex
(actually I had almost no help with anything during the first 12 months) - I
just muddled along. But one word of caution - beware old wives tales and
breastfeeding. My mother was adamant that if I ate peanuts and drank stout
it would build up my milk. HA!!
I don't drink so the stout was out, but I did eat a lot of peanuts.
Unfortunately Alex's immunologist tells me that was the direct cause of Alex
becoming allergic to peanuts even though he himself has never eaten one. And
I am serious - no peanut product has ever crossed his lips, yet if someone
wipes peanut butter on his skin he goes into shock.
The best things for breast feeding is a good balanced diet, lots of fluids,
plenty of rest and to simply relax, which is much easier said than done,
especially with our triers sometimes.
If you try breastfeeding and it doesn't work out - IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT.
Breastfeeding isn't as easy as many make it sound, and throwing trisomy into
the equation can make it harder still. As I have said many times before - we
do our very best with what we have at the time and with all the love of our
being - no-one can do more than that.
I have not lost my mind - it's backed up on disk somewhere.
