[tri-med] Re: Question

Katy,

I tried for 2 weeks before diagnosis and 2 weeks after diagnosis to get=20=

Tierney to latch. I had the help of a lactation consultant and a La=20
Leche friend (daily). Tierney is strong compared to many T18, but the=20
coordination of suck, swallow, breathe did not come for her. It was=20
profoundly stressful, but I was determined. I nursed my boys for 2=20
years each and wanted the same for Tierney. Ultimately, I went to=20
bottle feeding breastmilk. She is still on that, I don't anticipate=20
supplementing with anything else. I have a close relationship with my=20
lactation consultant, who has helped me to make sure I keep my supply=20
up (it is too good, I donate excess to a milk bank, have filled my deep=20=

freeze many times over...). You need to pump a lot in the beginning,=20
but now I just pump 20-30 minutes 4 times a day. I did not start cereal=20=

until she was 7 mos, she was doing fine on breastmilk.

I think nursing is one of the most loving and wonderful things about=20
motherhood. It was hard to give up on the idea of having Tierney nurse=20=

at my breast--still hard really. But I am as bonded or more bonded to=20
her than my other kids...in spite of those difficulties.

Several other Moms have done what I am doing and some have not been=20
able to keep their supply up enough to give breastmilk. There is also=20
the potential complication of repeated hospitalizations etc that can=20
make pumping very hard. We are really really really lucky in that=20
Tierney is pretty healthy, and has not been hospitalized since birth.

You will find your way.
