Gary,
I think that the reasons are:

1. For some folks it's 'better the devil you know'.
Another form of insurance might be better but it also might be worse.

2. The people who tend to support keeping what they have are typically those 
who have decent/good coverage with little problem or out of pocket expenses.
Why would they want to change a system that works for them?

3. People hate change.

4. Many people are quite simply suspicious of the government and their 
intent.

I believe SOMETHING regarding medical coverage  needs to be done. But I 
quite simply don't know exactly what 'that' is. And yes, it is a scary 
prospect going toward something that is still so nebulous.
