Hi Lori!
pseudomonas is the variety of bacteria Devon has always gotten for his ear
infections....which one exactly I couldn't tell you but the pseudomonas is
DEFINITELY what he gets most often. ALl I can tell you is that it IS
treatable...the drainage stinks when that's the one he has...and it does not
ALWAYS colonize (I know this because it has not colonized in Devon)...but it
IS resistant to many antibiotics. We use a variety of drops in Devon's ears
(keep in mind Devon has huge perfs in both eardrums)...we've used Floxin,
Tobramyacin, Tobradex, Cipro and one or two others....we always do a
different one each time. I've heard that it is also very common for
lung/respiratory infections. Because of Devon's asthma...and for a
LOOOOONNNNGGGG time he had major problems with having a flare up everytime
he had a cold....it went straight to his lungs...his doctors always treated
any respiratory infection very aggressively....usually a shot of Rocephin (a
kick butt antibiotic that my peds like very much and so do we!!!) in
addition to a 5-10 day schedule of oral antibiotics...depending on which
oral one we pick (my personal favorite is Zithromax once a day for 5 days
:o) Again...I'm not certain that his respiratory infections have been that
particular variety of bacteria...I only know it's very common and not just
in our kids....but in the general population too (at least that's what my
peds told me and what Devon's Pulmonologist told me as well)...and it has
not colnized in Devon. I should also tell you that with a daily treatment of
Flovent for a long while now (until our last appt. he was also getting one
albuterol dose a day with the Flovent)...Devon's lungs are now the strongest
they've ever been and the colds he gets not longer head straight for his
lungs :o)
