[tri-med] Prenatal Ultrasound Question from New Subscriber

Brenda,
Welcome to our family, although I hope your stay here
is short lived and you end your jouney through our
land with a beautiful healthy baby. I have a balanced
translocation between my 3&10 chromosomes. I had a
regular ultrasound at 7 months that showed nothing.
We had no idea anything was wrong until she was three
months. So, I'm afraid it's very difficult to answer
your question although others that may have been there
may offer more input. Just remember as you go through
this that when a healthy child is born no one says
they will "walk at 18mths, graduate high school at 17
ect" and so it is with our children. NO ONE knows
what they are capable of or not capable of until they
show us. Good luck and know that you are not alone.
As far as an amnio goes I think you will find that
everyone has different opinions. As I understand it
the risk of miscarriage is only about 1% (but I was
told that I only had a 2.5% chance of having a live
child like mine - so I'm not a believer in stats!).
One disadvantage you might hear is that some may treat
the infant different (ie lifesaving procedures,
surgies, ect) with a predelivery diagnosis. This can
somewhat be avoided by talking with your family and
doctor and discussing your wishes exactly before the
big day. One advantage is that if through the next
few months something is found to be wrong, you would
know in advance, know what you want to do, and the
medical personal could be prepared to deal with it. I
hope this wasn't too much for you, I just wanted to
share my thoughts with you. I hope I helped you think
of a few things without scareing you!
