Brenda,
Welcome to the list! I thought I would tell you that my husband is a
carrier of a balanced translocation between chromosomes 9 and 18. Our son,
Morgan, was born with partial t18q and partial monosomy 9p. We did not
know my husband was a carrier until after I was pregnant. We chose to have
an amnio when his results were positive. The risks of an amnio. are really
quite low. Anyway, we had been trying for some time to have a baby before
I became pregnant. I never suffered any miscarriages, that I know of, but
many miscarriage happen before one even knows they are pregnant. Since
then I have wondered if there were times that conception occurred and was
then lost and we didn't even know it. We have been told by our genetic
counselor that the chances of recurrence of t18 would be about 25%, chances
of having a child that is a carrier is 50%, and chances of having a child
with no abnormalities is also 25%. I hope that helps you some.
BTW, my Morgan is now 5 1/2 yrs. old and doing quite well. I will keep you
and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
