Jill, it is good to know the answer to that question upfront. I already
told you my story about my neonatologist. My pregnancy was treated through
a high risk clinic he ran. He had told me that he would do a c-section if
Anna went into distress. But, shortly before I was due, a resident working
with me explained that sometimes other practices covered on weekends and
those docs might not perform a c-section. I went home very upset because I
thought I'd had this discussion finalized. I ended up calling the
neonatologist's office, where the nurse was very sympathetic. A few minutes
later, the neonatologist called and gave me his personal pager #, the one
his family used (remember, this was 10 years ago, cell phones were not
nearly as prevalent as they are today) and said that if I went into labor
over the weekend, I was to first ask if the ob would perform a section if
necessary. If they said no, I was to page him and if there was any way
possible, he would come in and follow my labor. Do you see why I loved this
man? As it turned out, Anna was born in a scheduled c-section 10 days late.
So, as you said, explore this with your ob.
You are asking great questions, Jill. Keep it up. Just remember that many
times that there is no "right" answer, it's the answer that is right for
your baby and you!
Take care.
