Prednisone does cause you to gain weight and to get that moon face look but
it also stunts vertical growth if taken in large amounts and or over long
periods. There have been a few studies looking at this in children who take
prednisone for asthma and of course its a well known problem in children who
have transplants.
In adults the loss of vertical growth is obviously not such a great problem,
but it also causes a loss of bone density. I was on prednisone last year and
put on weight etc but the specialist wouldn't let me take it for more than 6
months because I was menopausal anyway and she said the added risk of
fracture because of bone thinning from the prednisone was too high.
