How quickly they forget......
In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn?t speak up
because I wasn?t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn?t speak up because
I wasn?t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn?t speak up because I
wasn?t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to
speak up."
Martin Niemöller
One of our leading ethicists in Canada told me that she thought it would take
another Holocaust to bring people to their senses.
I had a chance meeting with a physician who develops pediatric priority-setting
strategies in our province. She did not know what my issues were or why I chose
to attend her session on "priority-setting" at the conference for health care
workers.
In her talk, she said that "values" were an input to develop strategies. At the
end of her talk, I asked, "Whose values?" and she said, "the values of the
majority of the public" I caught up with her after the talk and asked, "what
about human rights and the value of autonomy?" That didn't hit her radar at
all. She told me "kids with down syndrome get the gold treatment......for now"
If the majority choose termination, then that sets the standard for "value of
the majority" and as a result, services are cut to others who choose otherwise.
It is clear to me, that this is how "personal choice between a woman and her
physician" eventually propagates into eugenics, clear as day.
