Nicholas has had many abdominal and incisional hernias in the last 2 years
since the fundoplication and Ladds surgery. He never had a problem with them
before the surgery in 2001. Since then, he has had 3 abdominal hernia repairs
and now has 2 more hernias and a pooling of blood under the skin at the bottom
of the incision. We visited his surgeon yesterday and he honestly said he has
no clue as to why these keep happening. He has never put mesh in children
because he says it doesn't grow with them and there is an increased risk of
infection. Nicholas has already had a staph infection in the incision area.
He said they are not at risk for strangulation so he will let him heal and
probably put mesh in the next time. My question to anyone...do you have a
child with repeated hernias or do you know of any family that has this problem.
We are going to seek a 2nd opinion soon. His surgeon is the Chief of
Pediatric surgery at a children's hospital. I don't know if it a T-13 thing, a
Nick thing, or the surgeon.
