[tri-med] Nicholas

Nicholas has been in the hospital since Tuesday. Last night they did surgery
at midnight to correct a broken femur (neck of the femur). The weight of the
casts he had on contributed to the break and the surgeon put in a plate (an
adult shoulder plate) to keep the bone together. He has another hip spica cast
and a cast down his right leg. They put an immobilizer on the left leg since
that fracture did heal. We got the results from the DEXA scan and he has
severe osteoperosis (T score -6.5). They are sending us to St. Louis
Children's Hospital to talk with a specialist about all this. They think there
are several factors contributing to him having 6 breaks in 3 months such as his
syndrome, not weight bearing as much as a person should, maybe not absorbing
all the nutrients as well as he should, seizure meds, etc. There's a whole
matrix of things that might be contributing to his bone density and we need to
see someone at a bigger center that specializes in helping him to increase his
bone density. His surgeon says he sees this about once every two years in
children with special needs.
We'll hopefully get to come home before Christmas. Please pray that we find
some answers to this frustrating problem with Nicholas.

Them danged ol' hills'll get you every time
Yeah, the good Lord gave us mountains,
So we could learn how to climb
