Morgan's IEP went fabulously!!!!!!!
I really love his new school. He was going to a
special ed. only school. While he was there I really
loved it. He got alot of one on one attention not
only from the teachers, but the therapists, too. But
all his goals there were skill oriented, so everything
he did was separate from the rest of the class. When
it was time for his p.t. he would be taken out to do
it, the same with the other therapies. This was the
same way all the kids were as they were all at about
the same skill level as him. I kinda liked that at
the time.
In Morgan's new school he is the only student in his
class with his severity of multiple disabilities. He
just loves the other kids, though. He is highly
interactive with them. So, when we wrote his new
goals everything is more education oriented (which is
the way it should be.) His p.t. time will now be
spent at trying to get him to be productively mobile.
That is, Morgan will walk in his pacer to the
computer, he will be able to walk to what he wants to
play with. (His old goals were written "Morgan will
move the pacer 5 ft.) This just makes him a more
active participant in the classroom. His new o.t.
goals are similarly constructed. This fall the
assistive tech. team will evaluate him to see what
kinds of communication devices might be affective for
him. Currently, his goals were to make choices
between 2 or 3 objects, but in the future they want it
to be a more cognitive choice. Rather than choosing
between 2 things because that is what we put in front
of him they want him to begin to try to say what he
wants with a switch or pictures or whatever they deem
will work for him.
All in all I am really pleased (even though I
embarrassed myself right from the beginning by walking
in with my zipper down.) Yikes!!!!! And yes, the
teacher noticed and tried to discreetly tell me, but I
wasn't very discreet in zipping them back up. LOL
