Congratulations on the very good news about Miekos heart. It is so wonderful
that your paed is so astute about the hypothyroidism. I hope she is feeling
a little more active soon.

Hi Everyone,
Mieko has been put on a new med for hypothyroidism. I
have no idea whether this condition has anything to do
with T18. Her pediatrician noticed she had large red
blood cells and thought it might be due to an
underactive thyroid. We did blood work and found that
Mieko's brain is releasing a high level of thyroid
stimulating hormone but the thyroid hormone in her
blood right now is normal. The doctors thought it best
to put her on meds now. Apparently, lack of thyroid
hormone can cause brain damage in infants. It can also
affect growth. In adults, it causes things like
fatigue and weight gain. She has to be on the meds
though for 2 years and her blood thyroid hormone
levels will be checked every 3 months. We'll see how
it goes. It takes about 6 weeks to stabilize once you
start the medication. Mieko has been very sleepy
lately, maybe we'll see a change.

On another note. Mieko saw her cardiologist last week
and had an echocardiogram. She no longer shows any
signs of pulmonary hypertension. The dr. said it could
be the vapotherm machine she uses during sleep, the
vsd repair, or just maturity. Her vsd was repaired
last summer and this is the first time we've seen her
pressures drop to normal. Yeah!
