Yes,
I am not sure where the figure came from but I remember from my youth
hearing that we need to eat at least a pound of dirt a year to stay healthy.

I had an aunt who was super fastidious about cleanliness, to the point that
when we visited and had cake or a biscuit we were sent to eat it in the
bathroom over the bathtub so that we would not drop crumbs. Her son rarely
left the house because she was so afraid of germs. When he was 10 years old
he caught a simple cold and died simply because he had never built up an
immunity her doctors said.

Its always stayed in my mind with Alex, and whilst I am careful I try to
allow him the "dignity of risk" to live a life not just exist. Its hard
sometimes though - real hard.

Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
