I did the same thing with David last year - took him off of all private
insurance when I had COBRA coverage because it was so expensive. Didn't
have any problems with Medicaid (once they figured out that he didn't have
private insurance). When I went back to work this year, I added him back -
just because it was less expensive than before. I use Eckerd Pharmacy and
they bill my Aetna, then Medicaid, so I don't have to pay the co-pay for
medicine.
When we had just Medicaid for David, everything was covered. Most of his
therapists preferred to have only Medicaid. They said it is easier than
having to bill private insurance, getting a denial, then billing Medicaid.
There was only one doctor that didn't take Medicaid. David just lost SSI
when I went back to work, so I was notified his Medicaid would stop (they
give you 7 months now before it stops). I contacted Developmental Services
and they will add him through their Medicaid. It seems that David is
covered easily because of his disabilities. It's Penn and I that have the
problem getting coverage (that's why I went back to work.)
Let me know if I can answer any questions.
