Time to set up an appointment with the opthamologist :-)
Its probably nothing - Krystal here in Aus has heart shaped iris - serious
they are both perfect little hearts - not round like everyone else. Its not
a problem - just a Krystal thing. I also know another T-18'er who has
starburst iris. Truly they look like gorgeous stars instead of your usual
iris.
But because the pupil is involved it could be coloboma's. Coloboma's are
more common in T-13 but not that uncommon in T-18. A coloboma is actually a
cleft of the eye. Its hard to try and explain - but think of a cleft palate
and relate it to the eye. It can effect any part of the eye - from the pupil
to retina. Coloboma's of the retina cause visual field problems (blind
spots). Where and how depends on how large the colobomas are and where they
are. (eg Devon can't see the lower part of his visual field - the ground)
and they certainly cause issues with glare.
They can't be fixed, but its nice to know what they can see (and cant see).
I think the only medical precaution is that they are more at risk of getting
detached retinas.
Alex saw the opthamologist a dozen times to be checked for colobomas. This
was before we knew about the T-18. His geneticst was convinced that with his
constellation of physical problems he would have colobomas. (ears, kidney,
heart, eyes all form around the same time in utero so when you get a problem
with the ears they automatically check the kidneys, heart, and eyes). Alex
doesn't have colobomas. In fact Alex's vision is the only body system thats
absolutely perfect and explains in part why I am very protective of his
eyes.
