Hello Becky,
Welcome to the site and congratulations on the birth of Caleb.
Our daughter, Annie suffered low blood sugars as well. When her blood sugar
was low, they did something they called, " Critical blood work" The blood
hadto be taken when the sugar was very low, maybe less than 2.6, but I can't
be sure.
Eventually, they diagnosed her with sporadic hyperinsulinism. Some times her
pancreas gave out too much insulin, but not continually. She was placed on a
medication called diazoxide. The thought was that eventually, it would not
benecessary. The medication seemed to work.
Our little Annie eventually died because they refused to diagnose her source
of respiratory distress, (tracheal stenosis or tracheal malacia). The
physicians did not believe her qualtiy of life was worthy of treatment. Her
heart defect was a small asd and mild stenosis of the aortic valve.
We wish you and Caleb all the best and don't hesitate to ask more questions
at any time.

Hi, I'm new here. I had a little boy, Caleb, on July 8 with full T13. He is
breathing well with oxygen, and his heart has a small VSD and a small ASD.
The
cardiologist said she was not too concerned about his heart. An MRI of his
brain showed Dandy Walker syndrome.
My question is related to low blood sugar. The Docs are recommending that we
stop giving him added sugar because it is probably a function of his liver
and
they think it will eventually fail. They have him on a continuous feed will
added dextrose (2 ml to 60 ml formula) in order to keep the sugar up. When
he
was on 3 hour feeds, his sugar got too low in between feedings. On
continuous
feeds, his sugar ranges from 55-66.
If anyone has any experience with low blood sugar, I'd love to learn more.
The docs said they never sent anyone home with sugar in their formula. I may
be
oversimplifying the situation, but it seems to be pretty simple to me.
Thanks for your advice and ideas.
Becky
