[tri-med] Re: Low blood sugar

In reference to low blood sugar, we fed our little guy very frequently
(every 2 hours) around the clock for 9+ months except for a few days
when he slept longer and we didn't wake him up for a feeding. Later, at
about 6 months, we added Polycose to our formula. Polycose is a caloric
booster but it is all complex sugar calories and the hope was to try to
spread his feedings out while giving him more calories to keep from
being lethargic and throwing up bile (from ketosis of the liver)

Let the specialists guide you through how you can stabilize him. Ask
how they typically treat other children with this. They will give you
disclaimers - but you can bluntly ask them if they will allow failure to
happen or if they can use medications to help minimize damage and offer
a comfortable outcome for your little Caleb.

You will be in our prayers.

Subject: [tri-med] Low blood sugar

Hi, I'm new here. I had a little boy, Caleb, on July 8 with full T13. He
is
breathing well with oxygen, and his heart has a small VSD and a small
ASD. The
cardiologist said she was not too concerned about his heart. An MRI of
his
brain showed Dandy Walker syndrome.
My question is related to low blood sugar. The Docs are recommending
that we
stop giving him added sugar because it is probably a function of his
liver and
they think it will eventually fail. They have him on a continuous feed
will
added dextrose (2 ml to 60 ml formula) in order to keep the sugar up.
When he
was on 3 hour feeds, his sugar got too low in between feedings. On
continuous
feeds, his sugar ranges from 55-66.

If anyone has any experience with low blood sugar, I'd love to learn
more.
The docs said they never sent anyone home with sugar in their formula. I
may be
oversimplifying the situation, but it seems to be pretty simple to me.

Thanks for your advice and ideas.

Becky
