[tri-med] Re: Louise

Louise's medical problems and the pain that I believe she suffered as a
result of them was the hardest part of looking after her. We only had 5
precious months with her but that time I believe was mostly happy. One of
the reasons for that was that both my husband and I tried as much as
possible to soothe her pain. We didn't use any pharmaceuticals with her as
I thought this would hasten her death probably mistakenly on my part maybe
not who knows now. Anyway mostly I used baths, massage, swaddling, patting
and carrying as ways of soothing her. I would probably use a few different
methods now with the knowledge I have as part of my nursing training. I
think that Louise would have benefited from tube feeding as she had a
terrible suck/swallow/gag reflex and I believe she may have had reflux. And
this 'may' have contributed to some weight gain. She may also have
benefited from oxygen therapy. My way of helping her with her circulation
was keeping her warm and giving her nice baths. Mostly I took photos of her
after bathing because this is when she was at her pinkest. She did have a
couple of apnoeas I am not sure whether these were central or obstructive
but as she didn't have 'noisy' breathing I believe they were central so she
may have also benefited from some caffeine therapy. Of course all of the
treatments would have to have been offered to me because I had no idea about
them at the time. Knowing what I know now about tube feeds and heart
surgeries I probably would have opted for surgery when she was older (if she
had gained enough weight of course). Louise didn't sleep much and spent
most of her awake times being held or laying in her cot or on a pillow on
her daddy's desk. I hope this helps you Abraham.
