I was very anti formula when Alex had his g-tube placed. I think he only had
formula for about a month when I started putting pureed food through his
g-tube.
That food was as vitmain and nutrient packed as I could make it. The very
best of vegetables, huge variety and I even went as far as cooking them in
V8 juice. (low sodium variety).
We met a lot of opposition at the time, mainly from the dietician who swore
blind that Alex would end up with an infection. The only infection he ever
had was while he was on formula!!!!
Alex was certainly the best fed and well nourished infant/ toddler I knew.
Even now I swear it has helped him to be strong and healthy (Alex rarely
picks up any of the bugs going around). I also think it helped him to
develop good eating habits. He is now an oral eater, but hates sugar in any
form, prefers vegetables to any other food - in fact he would happily become
a vegetarian if I let him.
The only time Alex had formula was when I was weaning him from tube to oral
eating (about 5 years of age). I was concerned that he wasn't getting the
variety or nutrient packed meals that he had whilst on the tube so I would
give him the oral diet with pediasure to drink just to make sure I got as
many nutrients into him as possible.
