Yes! When we moved to this school district when Miss P
was 18, they said that she qualified to send her to The
Riverside School for the Deaf, if I wanted. And it was
tempting, because her cousin Jerrie had gone there and
it was such a great experience for her. This school is
in an adjoining county, and the students live there from
Sunday evening to Friday evening with busing provided
from a central point in town. The reason that I chose
not to was because this was before her heart valve
transplant, and we knew that we were getting close to
needing it done. My big fear was that nobody would
monitor her as closely as I would, so we passed on it
temporarily, thinking that once she had the surgery then
we'd send her. But of course then she had the serious
complications and not only wouldn't I still consider sending
her, she no longer qualified for the program either. And
then by the time she'd recovered enough to think about it
again, I decided just to leave well enough alone and pass
on it permanently.
