Thats one of the problems with Emla it makes the vein smaller. Ask your
doctor about using amethocaine instead of emla - it numbs but actually makes
the vein bigger so its an easier stick. Amethocaine is available
commercially as an ointment. Most doctors know it as a cream to anaethetise
the eye and don't think of it for needle sticks.
