Currently there is no part of "No Child Left Behind" that mandates passage
of any standardized testing for graduation purposes here in MI.
In our ISD there are something like 22 school districts. Only ONE has as a
graduation requirement that the MEAP (Michigan Educational Assessment Plan)
must be passed.
It's my understanding that the MEAP is going to be replaced by an ACT type
test in the next year or 2.
At this point the only 'result' of NCLB is the new grading system for
schools (they literally get a letter grade based on multiple areas and
criteria). This results of this letter grading system could result in loss
of state funds (and it's happened around here).
Our district is working on ways to 'help' struggling students/special
education students achieve 'more'. In regard to testing: only 1% of the
student body can be opted out of testing. This includes ALL special
education services students no matter their degree of ability.
This program is in its infancy and there probably WILL be changes made
further down the road.
