The School Psychology Program offers a number of different graduate
degrees in school psychology. The degrees in school psychology are based on a
strong foundation in theory and research and prepare students for the direct
practice of school psychology and credentialing as a school psychometrist or
school
psychologist. The degree programs in school psychology focus on the practice
and direct provision of school psychological services that are based on a
strong foundation of research and application related to learners and learning
processes. The school psychology degree programs provide an integrated and
sequential program of study with related supervised practice. Students
participate in
courses and seminars in assessment and data collection; interventions and
decision-making, prevention, consultation, professional school psychology,
statistics and research, sociocultural foundations, psychological foundations,
human
development, educational foundations, and other areas. Students are required
to participate in extensive practicum, internship, and research experiences.
Three degree levels are offered in the School Psychology Program: Master of
Arts (M. A.), Educational Specialist (Ed. S.), and doctoral (Ph.D. and Ed. D.).
The three levels are well integrated, and each higher-level degree includes
the coursework and other requirements of the preceding degrees.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Master of Arts degree, titled the MA in Educational Psychology-School
Psychometry, is designed to provide basic entry-level skills for the
practitioner. As a result, the program provides less breadth and less depth
than the Ed.
S. and doctoral programs and utilizes a generalist approach. The M. A. degree
focuses on assessment/databased decision-making activities, however, other
professional practices are included. Prospective students interested only in
the
M. A. are generally accepted on a space available basis only after Ph.D.
applicants (highest priority) and Ed. S. applicants (next priority) have been
considered. Ed. S. and doctoral students entering without a Master's degree
must
earn the M. A. during the course of their Ed. S. or doctoral program, however,
it
is anticipated that students will not terminate their graduate education with
the M. A. degree.

The Ed.S. degree, titled the Ed.S. in Educational Psychology-School
Psychology, is designed to prepare the student to be a practitioner of school
psychology. The primary goal of the program is to provide a strong foundation
in
practice. There is a generalist approach to practice with no specializations.
The
student who receives the Ed. S. degree in the School Psychology Program is most
likely to be employed as a school psychologist in public and private schools
as well as other educational facilities, where they provide a variety of
data-based decision making, assessment, consultation, intervention, and program
planning services for children, youth, families, and teachers. The Ed. S.
Program
is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists.
Educational Specialist Student Handbook
The Ed. D. degree in School Psychology is practitioner-oriented with training
in extensive research skills aimed at program evaluation or practice-based
research. Within this framework, specialization in one or more practices areas
is possible, but not required. Although this degree is offered as an option,
students interested in a doctoral education are encouraged to work toward the
Ph.D. degree.
The Ph.D. degree in School Psychology is based on the scientist-practitioner
model. Within this model, it is expected that the student completing this
degree will attain extensive knowledge and abilities to be successful in both
professional practice as well as research. It is further expected that the
student
will gain a depth of specialization in one or more practice and research
areas. Graduates with Ph.D. degrees in School Psychology are employed as school
psychologists in public and private schools as well as other educational or
health care facilities, where they provide databased decision-making,
assessment,
consultation, intervention, and program planning services for children, youth,
families, and teachers. They also engage in teaching, research, training, and
program development in a number of public and private settings. The doctoral
degree programs are approved by the National Association of School
Psychologists.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE
The degrees in the School Psychology Program may lead to state and national
credentials. The M. A. degree is approved for the Alabama A Certification in
School Psychometry if the following pre-requisites are met: certification in a
teaching field and 2 years of appropriate teaching experience, at least one of
which must be in teaching, as prescribed in Alabama Administrative Code. The
Ed. S. and doctoral degrees are approved for the Alabama AA Certification in
School Psychology if a) the graduate obtains the NCSP or b) the graduate has
been certified as a school psychologist in another state or c) if the following
pre-requisites are met: completion of a basic program in teacher education,
eligibility for certification as a school psychometrist, and two years of
appropriate teaching experience, at least one of which must be in teaching, as
prescribed in Alabama Administrative Code.
The Ed. S. and doctoral degrees in the School Psychology Program are approved
by the National Association of School Psychologists. Students who obtain
these degrees are eligible for the National Certification in School Psychology
(NCSP), following successful completion of the national school psychology
examination. The NCSP is used by many states to grant state certification and
licensure in school psychology. The NCSP is used by the Alabama Department of
Education for granting the AA Certificate in School Psychology.
