Tess chews on her fingers too. In the daytime, we just try to keep watching
and say "fingers out", and pull her fingers away from her mouth. She made
them really quite sore at first, but now at night time we gently wrap her
hands in a soft stretchy bandage and then put a sock over the top (you
could use a mit). This prevents her chewing on them while in bed, and
allows them to heal and dry out. It also stops her from pulling at the
BIPAP. Ian uses Paw paw cream on the affected fingers before wrapping them.
Now although she still has the calluses, they are not in the previous bad
state. If she's having "quiet time", we actually give her a dummy to suck
on, and she seems happy with this, and it saves the fingers. I know, I
know, she eight years old and it isn't appropriate, but it saves the
fingers so..... I don't know so tell me if I'm wrong, doesn't hydrogen
peroxide sting like heck?
