Debbie,

Never been successful in getting Miss P to stop, but fortunately
for us it sounds like her damage is a lot less then Claire's.
Philina has a doozie of a callus right where you're describing
from sucking and nibbling action, and her thumb is always wrinkled
and at least a bit chaffed. Basically I just apply some Rx
antibiotic ointment to the area daily that was originally prescribed
for her Phenobarbital rash, but we keep it around now for her hand,
around the g-tube, and monthly acne outbreaks. Good stuff.

Keep on it with Claire though! There's a child on Philina's bus who
gnaws on her fingers and has actually amputated one finger totally off.
Did it piece by piece, and almost choked on the bus one day on a piece
of it.

My favorite over-the-counter 1st aid item is decolorized iodine.
No purple mess. Stings like the dickens when you first put it on,
but pain goes away quickly, and then it makes the area feel MUCH
better. And who know, stuff tastes bad enough she might not want it
in her mouth. Really knocks down the potential of infection, and area
heals faster too. It's been a staple in my household for years.
(I use to work with feral cats at the old house, and of course these
hyperactive beasties I've got around the pharm now have some pretty
sharp claws, and the kittens are rather oblivious to the damage they
can inflict with them.)

Good Luck,
