I don't know anyone who is taking them for epilepsy but my understanding of
the research into fatty acids and epilepsy is that it has nothing to do with
myelination but rather that the FA's increase the seizure threshold in
conjunction with medications. (FA's are used in the membranes of cells and
thats possibly how they work)
The research at the moment is limited, its only been done on animals and a
small adult sample, but the results so far look good that FA's decrease the
frequency and severity of seizures when taken in conjunction with epilepsy
medications. I have no idea what FA's they were using (remember there are a
few) or in what quantities but most medico's focus on 3 and 6. I personally
use a combination of 3, 6 and 9 with Alex but thats not for seizures but
dyspraxia. The amounts would have been listed in the journal article that
published the results I would imagine if the family can get access to it. I
personally have only skimmed this area because epilepsy is not something
that we deal with (always thankful for our blessings)
A study with children is underway but they only started enrolling children a
year or so ago so it will be a while till we see the results in the
literature I would imagine. The study was being done at Massachusetts
General Hospital by the team that specialise in the keto diet. I am sure
that there is information out there about the study. I would suggest that
the family keep an eye on the Cure Epilepsy website or the International
League Against Epilepsy for the results when they become available.
I hope thats of some help in pointing them in the right direction.........
