My daughter Soleah had the same thing. Her VSD was patched and they had to sew
into the microscopic nerves that control the heart beat. She came off of the
vent okay but they kept the external wires in for two weeks to wait on the
swelling, etc. to go down which is fairly common I think. In Soleah's case,
it did not help and she needed a permenent pacemaker placed. She has had a
pacemaker for 11 years with no complications other than needing to be replaced.
If this becomes an issue for you, I will give you more details. In the mean
time, I will be praying for a perfect recovery! God Bless you both during this
time, Nanci

My wife Elizabeth and I have a baby boy, Stephen, who was born October 5, 2004
with T13 mosaic.
I am currently writing this e-mail from Children's Hospital in Washington DC
where Stephen just had surgery yesterday to repair his VSD - it was 14mm. The
surgery went very well - he's currently having a little difficulty with
irregular heart beat but they have a temporary external pace maker attached and
this is correcting the irregularity. He came off of the heart and lung machine
fine but developed the irregular heart beat afterwards. We are hopeful that
Stephen will recover completely - the next day or two are important for him as
they hope to take him off of the ventilator.
Elizabeth and I also wrestled with the decision to go through with the surgery
in the weeks prior to it. We decided to go through with it based on the
Doctor's recommendation and the fact that there were visible signs that the VSD
was effecting Stephen (his oral intake was decreasing and he was getting more
easily tired among other things).
We will pray that the Good Lord would provide you wisdom and discernment in
your decision regarding Becca.
