Ahh this is the discussion that we are having with Alex's anaethetist.
Whether they can have Alex anaethetised, his pacemaker disconnected and be
walking through the hospital with him from the OR to the MRI room. They
can - but they don't like it (for obvious reasons) and its the anaethetist
thats the person responsible.

I wont go over the other part of your post - I just join those who don't
like chloral for reasons already explained. We havent personally had a bad
experience with chloral but have had an accidental overdose with clonidine.
A totally different drug but with similar issues - if something goes wrong
after you administer it there is nothing that you can do but wait for the
body to metabolise the drug and pray that you can keep the person alive
whilst that happens. No thanks, never ever again - give me a drug that has
an "antidote" if something goes wrong any time or at least a shorter half
life. Alex had had clonidine many times before that, and in the same dose
which was for all intents and purposes a small dose, but this day he was
given it via a dermal patch instead of orally (which theoretically should
have just given him an even amount instead of the peaks and troughs of an
oral dose but instead he got the whole lot at once due to his different
metabolism)

Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
