[tri-med] Re: Hearing Loss

We have had some scary experiences with Mitchell and chloral hydrate. He has
apnea to begin with and then adding chloral hydrate and expecting HIM to
control his breathing....just doesn't work well together. His dr thinks I'm
crazy, but I'd much rather have him under general anesthesia vs. a light
sedation. Plus, like Jude said-there is no reversal drug for chloral
hydrate. I have also heard of many trier kids having issues with chloral
hydrate and in other countries it is actually not legal to use because of
the breathing issues associated with it. I don't know a lot about it, but
know that my mommy intuition tell me to stay away from it. His doctor knows
my concerns and respects them--we try to find other ways to get things done.
He'll say...you know Katie we could just do this under light sedation-then
we don't have to mess with an IV. (Mitchell is a horrible IV starter)...I
always say, That's fine but you can't use chloral, so if you find something
else let me know and I'll think about it. :) He always smirks.

Anyway, hospitals love to use it in the US. Kids are suppose to wake up
quickly from it but Mitchell never did...it always took him a long time and
then he'd have issues breathing. He also never fell asleep as fast as they
said he was suppose to so then they'd give him more which caused more
issues in the end. This was all before I really understood that I myself
could say no I don't want you to do that. I just trusted the drs to do what
they were suppose to. Now I do trust his dr....but I also have my own
opinions and make them known if I feel I need to. :)
Good luck. I know with Mitchell's hearing aids--I myself can hear the
buzzing, so I wouldn't be too concerned about it. And if you are really
worried about it--just change the batteries every couple weeks just to be
safe. :)
