Dear All

Was just posting this message on the boards to offer a bit of support and
thought you guys might like to read it too?

Just a thought for today. I was at the house of a friend of mine. A friend
who I met through T18. She was on the phone with a lady who had just had a
little girl with T18. Her doctors knew about the problem from U/S, but did
not tell her. Her daughter lived for 11 days. Her mother is now in a state
of grief, shock and anger. She is a member of SOFT UK, and I will be
meeting her next Saturday at our Scottish conference.

We all sat and thought about it, our membership of this club, this T18 club.
Of SOFT, the listserve, the message boards. Normally when you join a club
its because you want to. You pay your subscription, get the t-shirts and
the bumper stickers and tell your friends. Who signed us up for this club?
I certainly didnt. Its a membership of a club you never wanted to be in,
and Im sure most of us wanted to hand those tshirts straight back and ask
for a refund. Say no thanks and it would all go away.

But this club has brought me into contact with some of the most special
mothers and children in the world. Some children who defy medical
convention and fight tooth and nail not just to live, but to achieve.
Mothers who act as advocates for their children in a world that would rather
ignore disability and difference and pretend it doesnt happen. Mothers who
suffer the grief and loss of losing a child, and still hold their families
together, hold down good jobs and move forwards in their lives.

So I think all in all, I will be keeping my tshirt. I never knew such
humanity until I joined this club. I never knew people could care about
others they did now know. I never knew what could be achieved with a little
effort. I never knew the friendship and love that can blossom from tragedy.

For each of you just joining our little club, these are the rainbows after
the clouds clear, when the sun shines a little again. If I can do this, so
can you. There are enough people around here to look after you, I promise.

Love

Demi
