[tri-med] Re: Has anyone??? Got any tips???

Janet,

We applied for SSI for Sierra quite some time back (don't remember for sure
when). I have to say that the process went smoothly. They will send you a
packet with paperwork for you to fill out and also anyone that you think
could offer good information on your child. They will want to know all the
doctors that your child has seen and they will also send out paperwork for
the doctor to fill out. The biggest tip I can give you is you MUST make
sure your application is fully completed when you send it back. The process
is lengthy, but they will back pay you from the time that you apply. I had
always heard horror stories about SSI, but ours went very smoothly. They
approved her the first time through and we didn't have to appeal. Another
positive is that in some states if your child receives $1 of SSI they
automatically get Medicaid. You know how hard our little ones can be to
insure. One draw back is that SSI is of course based on your income and
your assets. So, if you have a savings account they will count that money
against you. You can not save up their checks for them to use at a later
date because that will also count against you. When you get a raise at
work, they will decrease their SSI check. At one time we had a worker that
would make us send in paycheck stubs every 6 months. Our office changed and
now they make us turn them in every month. There are assets they consider
to be exempt...your house, car, etc. You probably have this, but just in
case their web address is www.socialsecurity.gov. I hope this helps and
good luck.

Nicole mom to Alyssa 4 (going on 21, keeping me busy, and keeping my hair
from getting to long because I'm pulling it out), Sierra 2.9 years (partial
trisomy 18 q, my brightest ray of sunshine on a gloomy day), Kobey 1 (true
mama's boy through and through, climbing, pinching, and loving), and Joe my
wonderful husband of 8 yrs. (without his support I would be in the funny
farm by now!)
