Ouch!! as one therapist to another I see this as unethical totally. No way
on this planet would I charge someone like that - its underhand and
despicable practice. In fact I would check it out with her relevent therapy
body. If she is a speech therapist I am pretty sure that the Speech
Association would not be very view favourably a speech therapist prescribing
and charging for exercises and equipment without having met the child.
Safety alone makes it really risky......... if you tried some of her
suggestions (even if they were for older children) and Hannah aspirated or
choked then she could be held totally accountable.
Sadly thats why every second post that I make (and others like Mimi make as
well) emphasise words like "check with your own therapist" or my background
is......... but........ No way would a reputable professional practice and
charge without seeing a child in person, no matter how good the net is its
not THAT good YET. Gosh even those therapists that do practice via the net
never send or say anything without you negotiating the therapy and fee
contract. (and the only speechies I know that practice via the net use
videos to "see" the child before treating of even recommending)
Legally I think you would not have to pay because she did not advertise as
charging a fee for service and you did not enter into a contract with her -
but - that doesn't take into account the friend of a friend situation which
is the hardest one to deal with...........
Sorry - no real help and I don't think much of her practices.............
For absolutely no charge I can send you some excellent references for books
on feeding issues with children who have special needs. And other than
sharing my experiences for you to share with YOUR therapist, thats as far as
I will go.
(so she slinks out muttering under her breath about some collegues and now
thinking twice about asking Mimi how to keep the dog off the couch when we
leave the house)
I have not lost my mind - it's backed up on disk somewhere.
