[tri-med] Re: Growth Hormone information

Karen,
I have a question, when they consider that Alex is getting too big are they
going by the "typical" growth charts then? Saying that he is very large
for a 10 yr. old boy? I don't think I know what too large is as when I was
10 yrs. old I was over 5 ft. tall also and no one ever thought anything
about it. Of course, at about 8 yrs. old I did have some health problems
related to rapid growth, Osgood-Slaughter(sp?) syndrome. The reason I am
curious is because MOrgan had his GH tested a few yrs. back (the blood test
one) and it was normal. The endo. followed him for one year, said he grew
the same amount as a "typical" 4 yr. old in a single year and she did not
need to see him again unless a problem came up. She did not do any other
tests. We heard the same old story about not using GHT for kids that don't
have GHD and that it did not significantly raise i.q., insurance wouldn't
pay for it if the kiddo wasn't GHD, etc. So, in a kiddo like Morgan, who
is very large for t18, is there a reason to consider that he may be going
the opposite direction? He isn't terribly large on the "typical" boy
chart. One thing I do know is that MOrgan is extremely calorie sensitive.
The dr. thought he was getting big enough that we could quit giving him
whole milk and carnation instant breakfast drink and those kinds of
supplements. Well, he was sick earlier this summer and when we took him in
he had lost several pounds. I was quite concerned as this was the first
time EVER that he had lost weight. The dr. said it was probably due to him
being sick, but to go ahead and go back to the whole milk etc. And you
know, he gained 3 lbs. in one month.
