kim,
i work with adults with autism and dual diagnosis. many individuals with
autism/pdd do the same thing you describe with waste whether they wear
incontinence products or not. the thinking is that it is done for
additional sensory stimulation as many autistic persons have differently
wired brains than "typical" people. the individuals i have observed doing
the same things candace does are often those with understimulated senses.
they seek out unususal tactile experiences that may appear odd or even gross
to everyone else. another example is water- many autistic people love water
and will flood tubs, sinks, toilets, anything with a source of water flow.
the way we help people stop sensation seeking behaviour that may have
negative consequences for them varies greatly depending on the individual
supported as they are all so different intellectually. the answer seems to
be persistence and consistency.
hope taht helps a bit....
