[tri-med] Gross habit

OK, I have been putting off writing about this because I was hoping it was just
a phase. It has been going on for a while. Candace has a really disgusting
habit that I hope someone can either shed some light on why she's doing it or
tell me how to stop her from doing it. She's two and in diapers still. When
she goes poop, she likes to take off her diaper, grab her poop, hold it up to
her nose and smell it. So, we tried putting pants on her to keep her from
taking her diaper off. She's figured out how to take off her pants now too.
At least to her ankles to get the diaper off. We watch her as close as
possible to try to catch her before she does it, but sometimes she still
manages to do it. We tell her no, yucky, etc. but it doesn't seem to be
helping. She also seems to be self-exploring, which means if she is naked she
will touch herself a little bit but then, of course, smell her hands. I don't
get it. I am at a complete loss. Is this a behavior thing? I know she smells
everything (OK, maybe 95%) she touches, but getting through to her about
certain things not being OK is not working. Does anyone have any advice or
anything?

Also, thinking about potty training. Any helpful advice or hints on what works
best? She has gone to the bathroom before on the potty, but she's not the one
who initiates it. How do we help her make the connection between realizing she
has to go to the bathroom and telling us so we can put her on the toilet?

HELP!!!!!!!!!
